When a customer contacts you last minute to place an order, you’re left with two choices.
- A. You can try to please the customer. You’re eager to show you are a team-player. The last thing you want to do is jeopardize this relationship. So you take that last minute order. However that can prove difficult for the warehouse guys who’ve already planned the delivery, picked and packed the truck.
- B. You can politely inform the customer that it’s not possible to deliver last minute. The issue here is that this risks annoying your trade customer, and hurting your relationship with them, especially if they think you’re just being inflexible. Some people don’t understand why you can’t ‘make it happen’. That’s what you’re there for, right?
What’s a guy to do?
Luckily customers can’t get mad with automated ordering systems. Well, they might, but machines are cold-hearted creatures who don’t budge if you get angry at them. 🙂 On our latest release of iStockist, you can set delivery schedules and cut-off times for orders.
For example, you might deliver 5 days a week and accepts orders up to midnight the night before. Or perhaps it takes 30 days to deliver from the time of order. Whatever the scenario, you can now set up rules around cut-off times and delivery days.
The next time they call
The next time your trade customer calls with their last minute order, you can happily type the order into the system. When it gets to delivery dates, you can provide the available dates which are based on your cut-off times for orders.
If the customer tries to coerce or charm you into a earlier delivery date, you can blame it on the system. Just like a hotel or airline booking site, when there’s no availability, ‘I’m sorry sir, there’s no availability on those dates.’
You’re no longer the inflexible person and magically your customer will understand. Happy days!
Set up your iStockist account with delivery days and cut-off times for orders and have a happier, more organised sales, warehouse and delivery team! 🙂
